Welcome to Three Questions with Van Heerling. This is where you get to meet authors, actors, painters and anyone else that is bent toward the arts, but on a more personal level. Today I would like to welcome a special guest. Paul Rega author of How To Find A Job: When There Are No Jobs, 2012 Edition. VH: Happy to have you here Paul. Let's get started. For what are you grateful? PR: What instantly comes to mind with this question and the reason I choose to answer it first is a time when I was sitting at my Grandmother’s bedside while she waited for a doctor to appear. Anyone that has ever been to a hospital, knows that this can be a long wait. She had fallen and it was suspected that she broke her hip, a common occurrence with older folks. I had always made an effort to get to know my grandparents usually spending time with them on my visits home from college. This time was different though, as she was in a great deal of pain and I feared she may die. I wanted to know more about this woman I had called “Grandma,” my entire life. As we talked, a question came to me, a simple question really but an important one. I asked her, “Grandma, what is the most important thing in life?” Without any hesitation, she responded, “Your health, Little Paul.” That’s what they used to call me back then as my father was “Big Paul.” Well, at that moment, I realized that my Grandmother was a person and not just some place we went to on holidays. I had learned something profound and I carry that idea with me every day as I strive to stay in the best condition possible. VH: If you could change one thing about our world, what would it be and why? PR: The wars across the globe have always bothered me as most seem senseless and cause undue hardship and death to millions. I can understand if you are attacked that you need to defend yourself with all of your might and will. But to start a war in an effort to conquer another is irresponsible in my view and unfortunately it keeps happening. It may just be a product of who we are as a species. Being that I am part German and Italian, my ancestors were certainly to blame as the Germans started the last two world wars and we all know what the Romans did. So, my answer is pretty straight forward, I would want to cease the starting of all wars and our world would be a better place for all who live here. VH: At what age were you the happiest? What triggered such joy? PR: I had just turned 15 years old in August of 1972. I was on a trip with my Boy Scout Troop where we rode our bicycles from our hometown of Wood Dale, Illinois to Jacksonville Florida. At the time it was a historic trip as it was hailed as the longest bike hike in Boy Scout history. There were no helmets then, and all we were armed with in addition to our new Sears Free Spirit ten-speeds, were our unique set of values we had learned as children during the early 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. When we completed our trip on August 20, It was an irreplaceable moment of time. The fact that we successfully completed our trip of nearly 1,400 miles was a euphoric feeling like no other I have since experienced. The trip is the subject of a new novel I am currently writing that should be released in approximately three months. My current book, titled, “How To Find A Job: When There Are No jobs” 2012 Edition has risen to the top of Amazon’s charts and recently hit the #1 position in Job Hunting and Career Books, surpassing the iconic “What Color is Your Parachute,” now in its 40th edition! My book in now available at Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/How-Find-Job-Competitive-ebook/dp/B0056PFONW Please check it out. VH: Paul I am half way through your book and looking forward to finishing it. I thank you for stopping by. I am sure we will chat again soon.

I loved this interview Van with the very talented Paul Rega! These were really great questions, quite deep ones too which I loved. Paul I thought your answers were amazing. I loved your answer to "If you could change the world" That sounds like something I would say as my feelings on war is pretty much the same. War makes no sense to me at all. It was great to get more of an insight into Paul Rega. Well done Van on the great questions...

I enjoyed reading this interview and learning a little about Paul Rega's background, ideals and achievements. How proud his grandmother would be to know that he still values her words today. 'How to Find A JobI' has soared to the top. I'm sure Paul's novel will be exciting and can't wait to read it when it comes out! Good for you, Paul.

In his book, Paul talks about the importance of networking and describes it as an investigative process. I don’t know about you, but over the years I have heard different definitions for this word, but Paul’s really clarifies it for me. He takes you through the networking process and provides a list of job sites with suggestions on the best way to use information on these sites. Some of the sites I am already using, but some I have never heard of and plan on visiting. I am very new to the social network sites LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and Paul mentions some other network options and why we should set one up. Now that I have read this chapter, I know I need to work on my networking because this will increase my chances of generating an income that will help me attain the lifestyle I desire and deserve. What are your thoughts on networking? How do you network? Is it working for you?

Great interview, Paul and Van! Paul truly has touched many people in his life, both personally and professionally. He is a person who is not going to just give you the shirt off his back, he's going to show you how to use it so you will be able to do it yourself next time. Who knows, it just might save your life! He is true to his roots and savours every bit of sound advice he has ever been given. Those simple words from his grandmother serve as the cornerstone of his every day life. He doesn't just live it, he shares it with others. Paul Rega is truly a class act.

Paul Rega really knows his stuff - not only about recruitment, but also about life. As an author myself and a leading university academic in my field, I've repeatedly recommended Paul's book to my students. These days, graduating isn't always the joyous, family occasion it used to be - it can be terrifying in today's job market, when you've prepared for life and there's little out there on offer. As I can see from Paul's answers in this interview, he's a deep and thoughtful man with a real empathy for those facing such challenges. Thanks too to Van Heerling for skillfully drawing out such wonderful observations.

To all who read and posted here: I can tell you first-hand that Paul is one of the finest individuals I've come across in my 53 years on this earth. Paul and I grew up together in Wood Dale, IL after we met each other through the Boy Scouts. We were close friends through high school and on into college. I also was on the Florida bike trip in 1972 and Paul and I have been reminiscing about the trip over the last 8 months or so. It brought back a lot of great memories and the values we learned as scouts. Paul, I can't wait to read your finished product and look forward to our continued lifetime friendship.

Your three questions & answers really hit home with me. First off, I definitely treasure everything my G-ma taught me, as well. The love & care that she so UN-selfishly gave of herself as her health was failing was truly heart-warming. It's easy to take your health for granted, until it's no longer there. Secondly, not only should we not start any more wars, but we should cease all war activities now. I hate the thought of what so many war victims go thru. And thirdly, I don't know what one thing I'm most grateful for, but I know my life has had many defining moments, & surely will have more in the future. Hopefully, as I read your inspiring book, I will be motivated to take that next step! Great interview! Thank you!

My husband had to leave his job of ten years when he developed Meniere's Disease--no one wants a dizzy bus driver. In the middle of changing careers, he was diagnosed with rectal cancer. Now after months of treatment, we can envision a time when he will be well enough to return to work. We've been using Paul Rega's book to plan Mike's job search. The chapters lead you step-by-step through the process of identifying jobs that are the best fit, approaching the employer and making the best impression possible. In a scary time, HOW TO FIND A JOB WHEN THERE ARE NO JOBS has been a powerful resource. I would recommend it to anyone struggling to carve out a new work life.

A great interview Paul. "How to find a job..." is an extremely well-written and important resource for anyone stuck in a rut at work and I can't imagine anyone more qualified to write this book than you!

I can't wait for your upcoming book. After reading about your success and business adventures in “How To Find A Job: When There Are No jobs,” (which helped me a lot in my job search, too) I have been looking forward to this book about your more youthful adventures.

Brendan, thank you for that--I'm almost done with "Trail of 32"----on my last pages in a final final read ---its about 375 pages and is really a coming of age story. Sounds like maybe you were in the Scouts as well. So glad my career book helped you --- makes it all worth it!

Amazing interview. My grandfather (Papa as I called him) was one of the most important people in my young life and I aspire to make him prouder of me every day if that is possible. I wish I had taken more time out in my teens to get to know him. He was a paratrooper in the second world war and lost his shoulder blade but he stood tall all his life and gave respect to all those fighting a war caused by others. I wish you every success with your book.

Hi L.--very touching comments regarding your grandfather. Anyone that fights in a war is a hero---I'm sure he is proud of you---you are a great talent and someone that has the spirit to go far with your books! Congrats on your new book "Disconnected!" To all who have posted here: Paul's book "Trail of 32" is destined to be a best seller. Paul and I grew up together in the 60's and 70's. We shared the same values and learned a lot together through the scouts and quality parenting back when life was a whole lot simpler. The book depicts those values and life lessons that are still with us today. Pass along the word. This is best seller material.

Hey Danny! What a trip that was! Danny biked the more than 1,200 miles with me that summer of 1972 and helped me with my new book in a big way. He is a true friend--and one that does not come around often. We have been friends for over 40 years!! The true mark of a Scout!

A super interview! A bit of an insite to "what makes the man" so to speak. It is obvious Paul has a side of caring which carries over to sharing his knowledge to the world in a book that helps people. We all know in todays world how competitive it is in todays marketplace. Pauls book is one I'd definitely own.

Great interview. It's nice to learn more about the author, and why he chose to write this book. It's timely, and I'm sure many will benefit from his advice. Paul definitely knows how to share and has an expansive personality. Paul mentioned this site to me, and I wish both him and Van all the best in their careers.

Great interview Little Paul! I am sure that everyone who had the opportunity to work with him in the past will agree with what I’m about to say. He is a hard working man with strong values and a lot of devotion for his writing. He is always there to help and share his knowledge.

Hey there Chana, there is a reason your're in HUM---as time goes on you will see that more and more. This is a long journey--the book business that is--it's a people business. I think what I have discovered on my last four month road trip was that I had to write what was in my heart--that for which gave me pleasure--I think then your audience will respond. Desire is the key to all great success. Congrats on all your success!
